Preparation for UMAT: Time Management
Below is a proposed time table which the student can use to aid them in their UMAT preparation, as well as their school assessments. The UMAT candidate may choose to study for each section of the UMAT separately, or to study for all three simultaneously. Focusing on each section separately will perhaps allow the student to familiarise more with that particular style of questions, and as the UMAT is divided into three separate sections, this might be an easier method of study.
It is up to the student to vary the time spent on school study as this differs with different subjects and the students' different abilities (i.e. one student may choose to spend more time on maths as it is their weak point, while another might focus their time more on chemistry).
PROPOSED TIME TABLE FOR UMAT STUDY
MONDAY
.25 hr of SUPERKEENEYE
.25 hr on Section One UMAT
TUESDAY
.25 hr on SUPERKEENEYE
.25 hr on Section Two UMAT
WEDNESDAY
.25 hr on Section One UMAT
.25 hr on Section Two UMAT
THURSDAY
.25 hr on SUPERKEENEYE
.25 hr on Section Two UMAT
FRIDAY
.25 hr on SUPERKEENEYE
.25 hr on Section One UMAT
.25 hr on Section Two UMAT
SATURDAY
.25 hr on SUPERKEENEYE
.5 hr on Section One UMAT
1 hr on Section Two UMAT
SUNDAY
.25 hr on SUPERKEENEYE
1 hr on Section One UMAT
.5 hr on Section Two UMAT
As you can see from above, it is important for the UMAT candidate to spend substantial time each day practicing for Section Three UMAT Questions with SUPERKEENEYE. This is because the student may have been confronted by similar style questions as those in Sections One and Two of the UMAT, yet is highly unlikely the student may have seen the diagrams in Section Three of the UMAT. Overall results from past students reveal that UMAT Section 3 is the toughest by far.
It may seem like a lot to ask of the UMAT candidate to allocate substantial time daily for UMAT preparation, considering it is necessary to put in about 4 hours for school study per night. However, the student must discipline themselves and be strict in utilising their study periods and free periods at school to study for their school subjects. Travel time on the trains and buses can also be utilised to read over what has been taught that day and to make summaries. In short, if the student wishes to perform well in the UMAT, he/she can do this with careful time management and prioritisation.
Time Management for Yr 12 students sitting for the UMAT is vital as they need to be able to manage their time efficiently. If they achieve this, they will be able to function effectively, even under intense pressure which is another skill most useful for taking the UMAT. It is important for them to concentrate on generating results with every effort they put in, not on simply staying busy. Thus it is important to learn how to concentrate on the task at hand. This ensures that UMAT candidate s can achieve the greatest benefit possible with the limited amount of time available to them.
It is important that the UMAT candidate is clear that the reason they are studying and preparing for the UMAT is because they want to get accepted into the health science course which they desire. This will ensure that the student is properly motivated and enjoys their study for both the UMAT and scholastic purposes. Their studies will appear as less of an effort for them. The student must remember that during their study they will encounter tedious or unpleasant elements which they would rather not cover, however it is important that these elements are studied properly, and it is up to the student to gradually modify their attitude regarding these elements.
It is also important that the student is aware of their strengths and weaknesses (in particular subjects, as well as in study habits). This gives the student an indication on how much time he/she should allocate for each area that needs to be studied, spending more time on subjects which require more revision. Also, it is important for the student to know what time of the day they are able to function at most efficiently. Some students find that they can concentrate best late at night, while others work at their optimum levels in the early morning. The student should find which time of the day this is for her/him and do most of the work which requires thinking at this time.
There are a series of questions which the UMAT candidate can ask him/herself in order to ensure that they concentrate on the right things during their study:
- What is the purpose of studying for the UMAT?
- What are the key targets/outcomes which need to be considered for this assessment?
- What defines an exceptional performance for this assessment? (decide on the results you wish to achieve and work towards them)
- What are my priorities and deadlines? (this is important to know when you are overloaded with work)
- What resources do I have available to me for the assessment at hand?
- How can I utilize the help and advice of my tutors and mentors to aid me in the completion of my goals?
Answering the above questions will aid the UMAT candidate in successfully preparing for and completing each task at hand. If the student knows what result he wants to gain out of a particular assessment, he can plan to achieve it with all the resources he has available to him.
