Q: What does Section III of the UMAT examine?
A: Section III of the UMAT examines non-verbal reasoning.

Q: How are the questions in Section III of the UMAT structured?
A: All the answer options in the UMAT are in multiple choice format.

Q: How should I approach questions from Section III of the UMAT?
A: The UMAT candidate should identify a pattern among the pictures in the stimulus and try to infer what the next picture in the sequence could be.

Q: How many questions are there in Section III of the UMAT?
A: There are 30 questions in Section III of the UMAT.

Q: How long will I be given to complete Section III of the UMAT?
A: The UMAT candidate will be given 40 minutes in which to complete Section III of the UMAT.

Q: Are all of the questions in UMAT Section III of equal value?
A: Yes. All the questions in each section of the UMAT are of equal value.

Q: How will the stimuli in Section III of the UMAT be presented?
A: The stimuli in Section III of the UMAT will be presented in patterns or sequences of shapes.

Q: Why is it important for health professionals to have sound spatial abilities?
A: It is important for health professionals to have sound spatial abilities because they will need to interpret graphical data such as X-rays and MRI results.

Q: Will UMAT candidates who are right-brain dominant perform better in Section III of the UMAT than those who are not?
A: UMAT candidates who are right-brain dominant may find it easier to answer questions in Section III of the UMAT than those who are not.

Q: Does this mean that all UMAT candidates who are left-brain dominant will perform poorly in Section III of the UMAT?
A: As spatial intelligence can be developed, this does not necessarily mean that UMAT candidates who are right-brain dominant will be more successful in Section III of the UMAT than those who are left-brain dominant. Therefore UMAT candidates who are left-brain dominant and who develop their spatial abilities will perform well in Section III of the UMAT.

Q: How can the UMAT candidate increase his or her spatial intelligence?
A: The UMAT candidate can increase his or her spatial intelligence through drawing pictures, using colour when writing, interpreting maps and making mind-maps.

Q: Are questions in Section III of the UMAT similar to IQ-type questions?
A: Some IQ questions may present patterns or shape sequences for you to interpret. This is very similar to the structure of the questions in Section III of the UMAT.

Q: Do the stimuli in Section III of the UMAT contain any written text?
A: No. Apart from the question stem, the stimuli in Section III of the UMAT are presented in a graphical format.

Q: Are the diagrams in Section III of the UMAT in colour or are they in black and white only?
A: All Section III diagrams are in black and white only.

Q: Will I need to name any of the symbols in the stimuli of Section III of the UMAT?
A: You will not need to name any of the symbols in the stimuli.

Q: Will I need to interpret the meaning of any diagrams in Section III of the UMAT?
A: You will not need to interpret the meanings of any of the diagrams in Section III of the UMAT, however you will need to identify patterns and sequences of shapes.

Q: Will the diagrams in Section III of the UMAT include photographs and paintings?
A: No. The diagrams in Section III of the UMAT will be mainly shapes and symbols.

Q: Will I be asked to trace or draw in Section III of the UMAT?
A: No. All answers will be multiple-choice only.

Q: Will I be asked to colour in as an answer to any Section III UMAT questions?
A: No. All answers will be multiple-choice only.

Q: What if I cannot see a pattern in the symbols in a UMAT Section III question?
A: If you cannot see a pattern then leave that question until the end and revisit it after you have completed the ones that you feel confident with.

Q: What if I am unable to see a pattern in the symbols regardless of how hard I try?
A: In this case you may need to guess the answer. Do not leave any questions unanswered.

Q: What should I do if I do not understand what the question is asking?
A: You may ask a UMAT supervisor, but they will not be able to give you any additional information regarding the question.

Q: What should I do if I come across question types in Section III of the UMAT that I have not prepared for?
A: Each year the UMAT is refined and new question types may be introduced. These question types may not be predicted. However, a good UMAT prep course will teach you techniques that you can apply to any new questions that may be introduced in the UMAT.
